On January 29th a group of nineteen volunteers gathered for training to become facilitators in our Restorative Community Conferencing program. The conferencing process is at the heart of RJP's work, and facilitators are tasked with creating an environment that allows a restorative conversation to take place, facilitating the creation of a repair agreement, and tracking the case through completion.
Our approach to transformative facilitation holds that people have within themselves the ability to find their way through conflict when given a safe space and the opportunity for authentic communication. Participants learned how to reach out to potential circle participants, prepare for an effective circle, invite respectful communication with the use of a talking piece, hold space for respectful and honest communication when emotions run high in the circle. Restorative justice practices emphasize than an effective repair agreement is created by the participants themselves, not by facilitators.
Facilitation trainings are held twice yearly. Facilitators make the our essential restorative conferencing work possible, and we are so grateful for their dedicated involvement. Many thanks to First Congregational Church of Wiscassett for hosting our group!
