Obtaining a Certified Copy of a Birth Certificate

 
 
From your municipality of birth or residence (try contacting your city hall or town office).

These types of copies usually are $10.00 each.

 

Through Maine Vital Records ($15.00 for first copy and $6.00 for each additional copy)

You can either walk in with payment by cash, check, or credit card

OR

you can send a written request through the mail with payment by check or money order.  This agency does not accept credit cards through the mail.  They ask that you enclose a long, self-addressed, STAMPED envelope with your request.

The following is the information that you will need for your request:
  1. Name on the birth record.
  2. Date of birth
  3. Name of city/town the birth occurred in.
  4. The names of the parents -- please use the mother's maiden name.
  5. State the relationship to the name on the birth record being requested.
  6. Please include a daytime telephone number.
  7. Please make a check payable to:  "Treasurer - State of Maine".

Maine Vital Records does not accept online orders.  However, you can process online requests through an independent contractor that the State of Maine has partnered with to provide an online service.

In addition they can be reached via telephone at 1-877-523-2659.  Be warned though that there will be an additional fee attached for this service.  The normal fee will be around $12.95 in addition to the $15.00 copy fee.  For instance, if you wanted a single copy of your birth certificate ordered online it would cost you $27.95.
