Artist Spotlight : Maria Hanley

OUR SECOND FEATURED ARTIST THIS MONTH, IS OUR VERY OWN LINCOLN COUNTY VOLUNTEER, MARIA HANLEY. MARIA IS AN ACTIVE FACILITATOR WITH RJP MAINE.  WHEN SHE'S NOT VOLUNTEERING, MARIA CAN BE FOUND THESE DAYS WORKING TOWARD HER TRAINING FOR YOGA INSTRUCTION, SPENDING TIME WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS, OR TAKING LONG WALKS WITH ZIGGY, HER AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD.
WE ARE PLEASED TO PRESENT MARIA’S PAINTING, 'CONSIDER THIS.'

ARTIST STATEMENT:

"I AM INSPIRED BY THE COMPLEXITIES OF LIFE AND THE STORIES THAT DEFINE
INDIVIDUAL MOMENTS. IF THERE IS ANY INTENTION IN MY ART, IT IS TO PROVOKE THOUGHTFUL EXPLORATION. I THINK THIS IMAGE REFLECTS THE CONCEPT OF AN OFFERING AND THE POSSIBILITY OF TRANSFORMATION. THE RESTORATIVE PRINCIPLES ARE AN INTEGRAL PART OF LIVING A LIFE WITH HONOR THAT CAN RESULT IN TRANSFORMATION."- MARIA HANLEY

Artist Statement:

Imagine a Wolf is my first picture book. It grew out of an idea I pitched to the publisher about a misunderstood wolf. I worked collaboratively with Page Street Kids to develop the book, and in that year-long process, the idea evolved from a somewhat cheeky tale of preconceived notions to a much better story about resilience that I think is in good company with the restorative principle of acknowledging individual dignity. The main character, Wolf (pronouns they/them/their) speaks directly to the reader, and ideally this is a read aloud experience, or at least that is how I think Wolf is meant to be heard. I will say that I am a big fan of the theologian and poet Padraig O' Tauma, who works in conflict resolution. I'm including a quote of his here because I was listening to him as I was working on the book and I know his words influenced the book's direction.

"For me, so much of the fairy tales occupy tired spaces of our world. We need stories of belonging that move us towards each other, not from each other; ways of being human that open up the possibilities of being alive together; ways of navigating our differences that deepen our curiosity, that deepen our friendship, that deepen our capacity to disagree, that deepen the argument of being alive. This is what we need. This is what will save us. This is the work of peace. This is the work of imagination." - Padraig O’Tauma
